The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has introduced hydrogen fuel cell powered ferries as a more environmentally friendly option for riverine transport. The first of its kind vessel is en route to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, having recently passed through the New Navigational Lock at Farakka in West Bengal. The vessel, built at the Cochin shipyard, was virtually launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 March and will operate on the River Ganga.
