A fishing vessel sank after colliding with a pilot boat on the James River in Virginia Harbor, with the two fishermen rescued by the pilot. The US Coast Guard received a call about the Fastand pilot boat and Miss Heather fishing vessel colliding in Newport News Small Boat Harbor, and the two fishermen were quickly taken aboard the Fastas their boat began to take on water. Firefighters marked the area with a red buoy and most recently reported that the fishing vessel broke apart and drifted. No injuries were reported, and there is no word yet as to what caused the collision. The Coast Guard is working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to recover the sunken ship.
The Coast Guard sent a 45-foot rescue boat and a crew from Newport News Fire Department to assist with the rescue. The Portsmouth Station boat crew also escorted the pilot boat into port, and rescuers from the Rescue Service were waiting there to examine the fishing boat crew. At present, there is no information available on the cause of the collision, and most of the rescue effort focused on retrieving the sinking vessel and assisting the fishermen.
