Westmorland and Furness Council is demonstrating their support for Merchant Navy Day on 3rd September by flying the Red Ensign flag at various locations including Barrow, Kendal, Penrith Town Halls, and Ferry Nab in Windermere. This day commemorates the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and honors the courage of those in the Merchant Navy who served during both World Wars. It also serves as a reminder of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.

In response to a national appeal from The Seafarers’ Charity and Merchant Navy Association, the council is proudly displaying the Red Ensign, also known as the Red Duster, on prominent buildings and landmarks. This gesture pays tribute to the sacrifices made by mariners and their families who were vital to the country’s operations during wartime. By participating in Merchant Navy Day, the council aims to show support for those who continue to represent the nation at sea.

Chair of Westmorland and Furness Council, Councillor Matt Severn, expressed his pride in the council’s involvement in Merchant Navy Day and organizing the flying of the Red Ensign at key locations. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of mariners who served during tumultuous periods in history and the significance of honoring their legacy. The council’s participation in flying the Red Ensign is a symbol of their solidarity and respect for Merchant Navy personnel past and present.
