Fortinet and Samsung Heavy Industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance maritime cybersecurity in line with the International Association of Classification Societies’ evolving security standards. The signing ceremony, held at Fortinet Korea’s Customer Briefing Center, included key representatives from both companies, highlighting the partnership’s objective to strengthen global cooperation in maritime cybersecurity and expand the scope of OT security and digital innovation in the industry.
Samsung Heavy Industries, known for its technological innovations in shipbuilding, brings core competencies in topside design critical for maritime infrastructure development. The collaboration between Fortinet and Samsung is a response to the adoption of new regulations by IACS in April 2022, aiming to safeguard ships from cyber threats. Effective from July 1, 2024, the regulations mandate secure integration of Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) equipment and system integrity assurance from third-party suppliers.
Fortinet will design robust maritime cybersecurity solutions, optimize existing platforms for maritime environments, and provide training to ensure compliance with the new regulations. Leveraging its OT Security Platform, Fortinet aims to enhance OT security across the Purdue model, ensuring visibility, network separation, endpoint protection, authentication, threat detection, and security operations. Samsung Heavy Industries aims to establish an innovative OT security system during ship construction, recognizing the growing significance of cybersecurity in the industry.
