Gasum, a Nordic energy company, has partnered with Finnish shipping company Wasaline to create the first large-scale commercial FuelEU Maritime pooling service. This initiative aims to help conventional fuel vessels save on compliance costs as the FuelEU Maritime regulation comes into effect in January 2025. The regulation, which targets ships over 5,000 gross tonnage calling EU ports, is designed to increase the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Under the FuelEU Maritime regulation, shipowners are required to reduce the carbon intensity of purchased fuel by 2% initially, with the reduction target increasing to as much as 80% by 2050. To facilitate compliance, the regulation allows for the voluntary pooling of emission reductions between vessels. Gasum and Wasaline have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on the commercial pooling service, which is seen as a reliable way for shipping companies to save on compliance costs and promote low-emission fuel production simultaneously.

Wasaline, known for operating a hybrid ferry capable of running on batteries, LNG, and bio-LNG, plans to contribute over-compliance to the pool by using bio-LNG on its daily route. Gasum will manage the pool, supply ultra-low emission bio-LNG, and offer over-compliance to shipping companies with conventional fuel vessels. With Gasum’s expertise as a bio-LNG producer and distributor, the pooling service is expected to provide a steady supply of ultra-low emission fuel to Wasaline while ensuring predictability due to the ferry’s regular route.
