Vitol Bunkers, part of the energy and commodities firm Vitol, has introduced a new FuelEU Maritime-compliant co-processed bunkering fuel. This fuel is being produced at the Fujairah refinery and will be marketed in various locations, starting with the Elandra Falcon, the first vessel to bunker it in Fujairah. The co-processed fuel meets the RMG380 very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) standards, ensuring it has the same chemical composition as conventional fuel, which streamlines compliance without requiring additional permissions.
Certified under the ISCC-EU scheme, this fuel features a sustainable element aligned with used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME), promising over a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity compared to fossil alternatives. Vitol is collaborating with DNV’s Emissions Connect to monitor compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulations, which will be verified by 2026.
Helge Hermundsgård from DNV emphasized the importance of their Emissions Connect solution in helping Vitol navigate the complexities of FuelEU Maritime compliance. Ian Butler of Vitol expressed enthusiasm for expanding their compliant fuel offerings, including co-processed VLSFO, as regulatory requirements evolve.
The FuelEU Maritime regulation, part of the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package, mandates significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions for ships over 5,000 gross tonnage calling at EU ports, with specific targets set for 2024, 2030, and 2050. The regulation also includes incentives for renewable fuels, obligations for on-shore power supply, and mechanisms for compliance pooling among vessels.
