In Ghana, maritime English training for instructors has been updated to ensure safety on ships with multinational crews. The Regional Maritime University (RMU) collaborated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to organize a national train-the-trainer course in Accra. The course, held from 16 to 20 September, equipped 24 participants with modern teaching techniques and methodologies for developing maritime English curricula. Proficiency in maritime English, which includes standard marine communication phrases (SMCP), is crucial for effective communication among diverse crew members, especially in high-pressure situations.

The aim of the course was to enhance Ghana’s maritime training institutions’ capacity to implement the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW Convention). By aligning the training with the STCW Convention and IMO Model Course 3.17, instructors are now well-prepared to meet global standards and contribute to safer maritime operations. The training focused on improving communication skills and ensuring operational efficiency at sea, emphasizing the importance of clear and effective communication to prevent misunderstandings that could lead to serious consequences.

The collaboration between RMU, IMO, and Ghana’s maritime training institutions underscores the commitment to promoting maritime safety and environmental protection. By providing high-quality education and training, instructors are better equipped to support the requirements of the STCW Convention and enhance the overall safety of maritime operations. The course not only updated instructors’ skills but also aimed to ensure that maritime English remains a standard working language for seafarers, facilitating smooth communication and coordination on ships traveling worldwide.
