The Minister of Transport of Ghana, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, recently announced plans to address a key challenge faced by seafarers – visa acquisition. He stated that the government will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to secure visas on arrival for shipowners and seafarers at the port. Nikpe emphasized the importance of resolving this issue to support Ghanaian seafarers in accessing job opportunities globally. He encouraged Ghanaian youth to consider pursuing careers as seafarers through institutions like the Regional Maritime University.
During a tour of the MV World Odyssey cruise ship in Accra, Nikpe highlighted the government’s commitment to facilitating visa processes for seafarers. The floating university, operated by Semester at Sea, serves as a mobile college and residential facility for students and faculty. With a capacity to accommodate up to 650 passengers and 260 crew members, the ship provides a unique educational experience for participants.
Accompanying Nikpe on the tour were the Minister of Tourism, Dzifa Gomashie, and the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali. The presence of government officials underscores the importance of supporting the maritime industry and promoting opportunities for Ghanaian seafarers. By addressing visa challenges and promoting maritime education, the government aims to enhance the prospects for Ghanaian seafarers in the global job market.
