Green Shipping Training to Empower Women Leaders in Southeast Asia

Women leaders in Southeast Asia’s maritime sector recently completed an intensive IMO training course focusing on green shipping technologies and digitalization. The 10-day program, held during the 2024 Korea Maritime Week, included 18 participants, consisting of 5 executive-level and 13 management-level officials. The training aimed to enhance their skills in these crucial areas and was organized by the IMO in partnership with South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries as part of the SMART-C Women Project.

Funded by the Republic of Korea, the SMART-C Women Project seeks to promote gender equality by improving the skills and job opportunities for female maritime professionals in developing countries, particularly within the ASEAN and Pacific regions. The training covered a range of topics, such as women’s leadership, work-life balance, personal branding, and maritime digitalization. Participants also had the opportunity to visit prominent institutions like the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, as well as attend the 2024 Korea Maritime Week and the WIMA Asia Regional Conference.

The initiative was designed to empower women in the maritime sector by providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in their roles. By focusing on green shipping technologies and digitalization, the training aimed to equip participants with the tools needed to drive innovation and sustainability in the industry. Through practical visits and participation in key events, the women leaders gained valuable insights and experiences that will contribute to their professional growth and development.
