DNV, a certification body, has granted approval in principle (AiP) for an 80,000m3 capacity liquefied hydrogen carrier developed by Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL), Woodside, HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and Hyundai Glovis. This collaboration began on January 31, 2024, with MOL leading the development of the carrier. The AiP was issued following the completion of a hazard identification study (HAZID) and an environmental impact identification (ENVID) study. These evaluations are crucial for assessing and mitigating risks associated with the ship’s design, operation, and environmental impact.
The HAZID study is a safety evaluation method that identifies potential risk items in a design concept and evaluates the effectiveness of countermeasures. On the other hand, the ENVID study aims to quickly identify potential environmental impacts during the project planning stage and determine ways to manage or mitigate risks. Both studies play a vital role in ensuring the safety and sustainability of the liquefied hydrogen carrier.
With a target delivery and entry into service set for 2030, the partners are committed to further developing the vessel. This milestone represents a significant step towards the realization of a sustainable and efficient solution for transporting liquefied hydrogen. By continuing their collaboration and adhering to rigorous safety and environmental standards, the partners aim to bring this innovative vessel to market in the near future.
