ClassNK Approves GSC’s Ammonia Fuel Tank Design for Container Ships

ClassNK has awarded an approval in principle for the design of a prismatic ammonia fuel tank for container ships, developed by Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships. The tank is designed to ensure safe storage of ammonia and minimize the reduction in the number of cargo containers, while also improving constructability and increasing the fuel volume.

ClassNK has granted approval in principle (AiP) for the design of a prismatic ammonia fuel tank for container ships developed by the Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships (GSC). Ammonia is seen as a potential marine fuel for decarbonizing shipping due to its lack of CO2 emissions when combusted, but it presents challenges such as the risk of leakage and low volumetric efficiency. The Type B tank developed by GSC uses ordinary steel for the structure of the fuel storage hold space, except for the bottom part, resulting in a reduction in the amount of steel for low-temperature service. Prismatic tanks offer superior volume efficiency compared to cylindrical tanks as they can be designed to fit the ship’s hold. The tank has been designed to ensure safe storage of ammonia and minimize the reduction in the number of cargo containers due to the placement of fuel tanks, while also simplifying the shape of the storage space for the tank, improving constructability and increasing the fuel volume.

ClassNK carried out the design review of the tank based on its rules and guidance, incorporating the IGF Code and “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edition 2.1)”. After confirming it complies with the prescribed requirements, ClassNK awarded the AiP. The organization will continue to contribute to advanced initiatives toward decarbonization, including safety assessments. This approval represents a step forward in the development of ammonia as a marine fuel and in the efforts to reduce emissions in the shipping industry.
