The Kolkata Dock System has expanded with the addition of a second dock system, enabling it to handle up to 87.5 million tonnes of cargo annually. The Haldia Dock Complex achieved a record cargo throughput of 49.54 million tonnes in the last financial year, surpassing its previous high of 48.608 million tonnes in FY 2023. The scheme offers concessions to port users for loading dry bulk cargoes like coal, manganese ore, iron ore, and limestone, reducing freight and vessel charges by up to Rs 100 per tonne handled.
Syamprasad Mookerjee Port set a new record by handling 66.4 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2024, exceeding the previous high of 65.66 million tonnes in FY 2023. The port now aims to handle around 70 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2025. The port’s achievements indicate a positive growth trend in cargo handling and show its commitment to increasing capacity and efficiency in moving goods through its facilities. With these developments, the port is projected to continue its growth trajectory in the coming years.
The upgrades and operational achievements at the Kolkata Dock System and the Haldia Dock Complex demonstrate a significant increase in cargo handling capacity and efficiency. The record cargo throughput levels achieved in the last financial year point towards the ports’ enhanced capabilities in managing various types of cargo efficiently. The concessions offered to users for loading specific dry bulk cargoes further incentivize businesses to utilize the ports for their shipping needs, contributing to the ports’ continued success and growth in cargo handling operations.
