The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is introducing training initiatives for women in the ASEAN and Pacific regions, which could offer insightful strategies for seafarer unions in the UK, Dutch, and Swiss to promote gender diversity in maritime careers. These programs aim to break down barriers and empower women in the maritime sector by providing training in environmental and digital technologies, along with networking opportunities and fellowships. By focusing on digitalization and environmental competencies, these initiatives enhance women’s leadership and offer valuable insights into fostering gender equality within the seafaring community.
One specific program under the IMO’s Sustainable Maritime Transport Training Programme is SMART-C Women, created to support female maritime professionals in ASEAN and Pacific regions. Through online and on-site training, women gain access to digital skills, fellowships, and career networking opportunities. The project’s emphasis on digitalization and environmental competencies has had a significant impact in empowering women within the sector, highlighting the importance of leadership skills, mentoring, and global networking for career advancement.
Collaborating with regional Women in Maritime Associations (WIMAs), the SMART-C Women project focuses on increasing employment opportunities for women in developing countries in the maritime sector. It provides training in maritime matters, fellowships, global networking, and consultancy services to develop national plans for empowering women. This initiative, established through an agreement between IMO and the Republic of Korea, is the first thematic project with Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding specifically targeting women in maritime. By offering comprehensive support, the project aims to elevate women in maritime roles and prepare them for emerging opportunities in the industry.
