The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has released its Monthly Piracy Report for May 2024, detailing incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships as reported by IMO Member States and international organizations. The report includes various instances of piracy in international waters, territorial waters, and port areas, highlighting the ongoing threat faced by ships and their crews.
One of the reported incidents involved armed pirates hijacking a fishing vessel in the Arabian Sea, while another saw pirates taking control of a product tanker in West Africa and stealing crew and ship properties. Other incidents included armed pirates boarding a general cargo ship in the Arabian Sea, a bulk carrier in the Malacca Strait, and a tug boat in the South China Sea, among others. Ship crews took various measures to alert authorities and protect themselves during these attacks.
In port areas, ships were also targeted by perpetrators looking to steal valuable items or equipment. Incidents included thefts aboard anchored chemical tankers in the Malacca Strait and Indian Ocean, as well as a robbery on a general cargo ship in West Africa. Authorities were alerted in each case, and investigations were launched to apprehend the perpetrators and recover stolen items. The report serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the maritime industry in combating piracy and ensuring the safety of ships and their crews.
