Research conducted by the Royal Lifesaving Society – Australia and AMSA has found that drowning deaths from falling overboard on recreational and commercial vessels remain a significant issue. Surprisingly, the majority of individuals who lose their lives in such accidents are not wearing life jackets. This alarming trend highlights the importance of wearing a life jacket while on board a boat.
According to David Marsh, AMSA’s National Operations Manager – Regions, wearing a life jacket can greatly improve your chances of survival if you happen to fall overboard unexpectedly. Marsh emphasizes that the critical moment of a fall overboard may not allow you enough time to put on a life jacket. Therefore, it is crucial to wear one beforehand to ensure your safety in case of an emergency.
This research serves as a stark reminder of the importance of taking precautions while out on the water. By simply wearing a life jacket, individuals can significantly enhance their chances of surviving a fall overboard. It is crucial for both recreational boaters and commercial vessel operators to prioritize safety measures to prevent tragic accidents and loss of life on the water.
