Hong Kong Salvage and Towage (HKST) has recently received two new tugs, the LNG Guardian I and LNG Guardian II, designed by Canadian shipbuilder Robert Allan Ltd. These vessels, certified by Bureau Veritas, have been tailor-made for use in Hong Kong’s LNG Terminal (HKTL). They feature a unique Z-drive electric propulsion system that can operate on diesel or dual-fuel (diesel and LNG) power units. The primary role of these tugs is to maintain a safety perimeter around the terminal, assist in berthing LNG carriers, and transport personnel and equipment between the FSRU and the jetty.

In addition to their main duties, the LNG Guardian I and II may also be called upon for standby tasks such as emergency towing of the FSRU, firefighting, oil spill response, and rescue operations. Equipped with advanced technology and designed to meet the demands of the HKTL, these tugs are essential for ensuring the smooth operations and safety of the terminal. Their versatile capabilities enable them to handle a wide range of tasks efficiently and effectively, making them invaluable assets to HKST.
