India is aiming to become a global leader in green shipbuilding by 2030, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has taken a step in that direction by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SeaTech Solutions International, Shift Energy, and ABS. The MoU is for the construction of India’s first electric tug, E-VOLT 50, which is designed to help the nation’s tugboat industry reduce carbon emissions and improve operational efficiency. GRSE will build the tug based on the design developed by SeaTech Solutions International, a Singapore-based company. The Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, Cmde PR Hari, stated that the E-VOLT 50 represents a bold step towards a cleaner and greener future for the maritime sector, aiming to redefine performance, efficiency, and environmental stewardship through sustainable energy solutions and cutting-edge technology.

This initiative aligns with India’s goal of becoming a global hub for green shipbuilding and demonstrates the country’s commitment to embracing sustainable energy solutions in the maritime industry. The partnership between GRSE and the international companies involved in the MoU reflects a collaborative effort to drive innovation and environmental stewardship in the shipping sector. By leveraging advanced technology and sustainable energy solutions, India aims to set new standards for performance and efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of maritime operations. The development of the E-VOLT 50 electric tug represents a significant milestone in India’s journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable maritime industry.
