The Panama Maritime Authority recently hosted senior directors from Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), who announced plans to create 15 new job opportunities for Panamanian seafarers in the second semester of 2023. Additionally, they anticipate hiring 10 new cadets in 2024. These opportunities are a result of a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement signed between the PMA and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism of Japan, aimed at mutual recognition in training and certification for seafarers.

As part of this agreement, several Panamanian officers and cadets have already begun the process to obtain their Japanese license. Two approved officers and three cadets, including one working on a Japanese-flagged ship, have already embarked on this journey. Additionally, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has evaluated and approved the hiring of around 10 cadets from Panamanian maritime universities for 2024.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has shown confidence in the Panama Shipping Registry and the training of new seafarers, leading to their desire to expand the presence of Panamanian personnel on their ships. This move not only benefits Panamanian seafarers but also strengthens the commercial and friendship bonds between Panama and Japan, while enhancing the image of the country and the competences of its seafarers.
