PowerCell Group has received approval in principle (AIP) from DNV, a classification society, for its methanol-to-power solution. This innovative system combines a methanol reformer from RIX Industries with the PowerCell Marine System 225, designed to support the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner energy sources. Methanol is emerging as a promising alternative fuel alongside hydrogen, offering potential benefits for maritime decarbonization and electrification. With its widespread availability in major global ports, methanol presents a viable option to complement hydrogen and increase its accessibility for marine applications.
The integrated power system developed by PowerCell and RIX Industries converts methanol into hydrogen, which is then utilized in a fuel cell to provide a clean and efficient energy source. This solution streamlines installation, improves safety, and meets the specific requirements of the maritime sector. The AIP from DNV validates that the system design meets rigorous safety standards, paving the way for more sustainable maritime operations. Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group, emphasized the significance of their ‘Industrialized Innovation’ strategy, which aims to minimize time-to-market, technical risk, and investment for customers driving marine electrification and decarbonization.
Dr. Andreas Bodén, SVP & CTO of PowerCell Group, highlighted the collaboration with RIX Industries in optimizing technologies for enhanced efficiency and safety. The AIP from DNV further confirms the success of their efforts in advancing sustainable marine solutions. Bryan Reid, CSO of RIX Industries, emphasized that these power systems directly address the need for increased energy density and simplified integration, enabling the immediate deployment of Net Zero solutions. The partnership between PowerCell and RIX Industries showcases a commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry.
