Water taxis have been introduced in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, between Namo Ghat and Assi Ghat, operating along all 80 Ghats with floating jetties provided at each. Four stations will also be built along the route, offering inhabitants of Varanasi a form of transport alternative to the current cargo and cruise options. Tourism and travel will contribute to funding, as part of the Inland Waterways Authority of India’s (IWAI) collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism.
While transportation is the main service the water taxi will provide, it will also offer tourists the chance to view the beauty of Banaras Ghats. The move follows the launch of the country’s first water system in Kerala, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
