Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has raised concerns about recent breakdowns in maritime shipping and emphasized the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations. He has called for thorough investigations by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) and advocated for rigorous compliance measures before vessels are cleared for operation. Recent incidents in Savusavu and Kadavu have prompted comprehensive investigations by the MSAF, with non-compliant vessels being withheld until regulatory issues are addressed.
Ro Filipe highlighted the necessity of following safety protocols, including maintenance procedures such as dry docking and generator replacements. He stressed the importance of applying the law in terms of compliance to ensure safe maritime travel, particularly for Fijian island communities. Former Infrastructure Minister Jone Usamate has urged the government to support local boat operators in acquiring new vessels by extending license periods to 15 years, allowing operators to secure financing for new boats.
Ro Filipe reiterated MSAF’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and enforcing compliance measures to improve maritime safety. He emphasized the need for vessels to undergo necessary maintenance and inspections to prevent breakdowns and ensure the safety of passengers and crew. The government is urged to explore ways to support local boat operators in acquiring new vessels to improve the overall safety and reliability of maritime transportation in Fiji.
