Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPA) aims to increase its throughput to 7 million TEU in FY25 from the current 6.24 million TEU in FY24, citing growth in exports as a significant factor. Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of JNPA, notes a 7% year-on-year increase in exports compared to the previous fiscal year, with pharmaceutical products, auto parts, and chemicals identified as key growth drivers.
By April 2025, JNPA plans to have a capacity of 10 million TEU and will be inviting tenders for the Vadhavan port in August pending cabinet approval. The first phase of construction at Vadhavan port is expected to handle 15 million TEU, with this capacity projected to increase to 23.2 million TEU after the second phase is completed.
Additionally, JNPA intends to handle a portion of transshipment traffic, with plans to expand storage capacity to accommodate containers held at the port as part of transshipment activities. Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal has agreed to take on some of these functions. Currently, transshipment cargo accounts for 1% of the traffic at JNPA, but this figure may rise to 10-15% in the coming years.
