Deendayal port emerged as the top port in terms of cargo volume, handling 12.71 tonnes and making up 17.64 percent of the total cargo handled in the 12 ports. Paradip port followed closely behind with 12.64 tonnes and 17.55 percent, while Visakhapatnam, JNPA, and Mumbai ports also had significant cargo volumes of 8.57, 7.45, and 5.79 tonnes respectively.
Visakhapatnam port stood out with a cargo growth rate of 22.05 percent, leading the way for other ports including Chennai, Cochin, and Mumbai which saw growth rates of 9.10, 7.78, and 5.89 percent respectively. However, some ports experienced a decline in cargo handling during May 2024, with Kolkata, Kamarajar, and Mormugao ports recording negative growth rates of 15.70, 3.58, and 10.55 percent.
Despite the mixed performance, overall growth in cargo handling was observed at various ports including VO Chidambaranar, Paradip, Deendayal, New Mangalore, and JNPA ports, with growth rates ranging from 1.78 to 5.59 percent. The Indian Ports Association data highlights the diverse performance of different ports in handling cargo during the specified period.
