The decision to enhance vehicle enforcement measures was made after a medical student was killed in a tragic accident involving a rock falling from a tipper lorry near Vizhinjam. Thiruvananthapuram District Collector Geromic George stated that the decision was reached following a meeting with stakeholders, including political representatives. The focus is on preventing overloading of lorries transporting construction materials to the seaport.
The Motor Vehicles Department, police, and Excise department will collaborate to ensure vehicle fitness and curb overloading. Adani Group, responsible for the port’s construction, will provide a list of contracted vehicles. Alternative routes for transporting materials are being considered after consulting with traffic police. A special squad will monitor vehicles for overloading at loading and unloading sites.
Guidelines for monitoring will be developed by the police and district administration. Discussions on compensating the victim’s family are underway, with a report to be submitted to the state government soon. The international port at Vizhinjam is being developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. This decision reflects a coordinated effort to improve safety and prevent accidents in the future.
