Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata made history when it welcomed the largest ship to ever dock at its port, the MT Clearocean Ajax. This crude oil carrier boasted a massive capacity of 113,252 tons. To add to the record-breaking feat, the ship arrived at SMP with an impressive cargo of 48,111 tons of naptha, making it the highest single parcel load for Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL). The previous record for the highest single parcel load of naptha handled by SMP was 44,088 tonnes.

The journey of the MT Clearocean Ajax began at Port Mina al Ahmadia in Kuwait, where it embarked with a total of 82,271 tons of naptha. During its voyage, the tanker stopped at Visakhapatnam to discharge 34,160 tonnes before proceeding north towards Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) under SMP in Kolkata. This substantial delivery emphasizes the port’s growing prominence in handling significant volumes of goods.

The achievement of accommodating the largest ship and handling a record-breaking naptha load demonstrates SMP’s capability and infrastructure to handle substantial quantities of cargo. It highlights the port’s increasing importance in the region’s maritime trade network.
