The President of Ghana Industrial Trawlers Association (GITA), Stephen Adjo Katcher, recently emphasized the importance of training for seafarers to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies in the maritime industry. He encouraged seafarers to invest in their career development during the Closed Fishing Season to enhance their effectiveness, competitiveness, and service quality within the sector.
Speaking during the 2024 Closed Fishing Season in Upper Dixcove, Ahanta West Municipality, Katcher highlighted the crucial role of well-equipped and knowledgeable seafarers in the maritime industry. He pointed out the need for training programs to address the current shortage of captains in Ghana, which often results in the hiring of foreign personnel to man shipping vessels.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the sector, including high operational costs and economic burdens, Katcher emphasized the importance of exploring solutions during the Closed Season. He urged trawler operators to focus on vessel maintenance, upgrades, alternative income-generating activities, and participation in training programs to enhance crew skills and knowledge. Additionally, he called on members of GITA to strictly adhere to closed-season regulations to protect marine resources for future generations.
