The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance their collaboration in maritime decarbonization, digitalization, and manpower development. The MOU was signed by Mr. Teo Eng Dih, CEO of MPA, and Mr. Takaya Soga, President and Group Chief Executive of NYK, on July 2, 2024. The collaboration aligns with global initiatives such as the International Maritime Organization’s Greenhouse Gas Strategy 2023 and the Paris Agreement.
This partnership aims to promote a sustainable maritime industry by focusing on the safe use of alternative fuels like biofuels, methanol, and ammonia. Additionally, MPA and NYK will work on developing maritime training programs for seafarers, specifically for ammonia-fueled vessels. The collaboration will also support leadership training for professionals to transition to low or zero-carbon fuels, in line with Singapore’s fuel ammonia strategy.
Singapore, a key bunkering and maritime hub port, is at the forefront of introducing alternative fuels and upskilling its workforce. The MOU between MPA and NYK signifies a significant milestone in their ongoing collaboration and aims to contribute to the long-term development of the maritime industry. This partnership underscores the commitment of both organizations to drive sustainable shipping practices and support the industry’s transition towards a smart and eco-friendly future.
