The Maritime Association of Shipowners Shipmanagers and Agents (MASSA) has called on the global shipping community to prioritize the mental well-being of Indian seafarers by providing them with free internet connection on board cargo ships. This request was made on World Maritime Day, which is celebrated on September 28th each year to recognize and celebrate the important role of seafarers. The lack of contact with the outside world can have a significant impact on the well-being of seafarers, and there is growing concern about suicidal ideation among this group. MASSA CEO Captain Shiv Halbe emphasized that internet connectivity on cargo ships would help seafarers stay connected with their families and friends, reducing feelings of isolation.

Former MASSA Chairman and senior manager of Anglo-Eastern Shipping Group, Capt Vinay Singh, highlighted the positive impact of improved internet connectivity on board cargo ships. He mentioned that the installation of Starlink broadband satellite internet on their 100th cargo ship was a great benefit to the Indian seafaring community, and noted that they currently employ over 21,000 seafarers on contractual terms. Their study showed that besides individual benefits, improved internet connectivity also improved team engagement and professional relationships among crew members.

It is clear that providing free internet connection on cargo ships would significantly enhance the well-being of Indian seafarers, who often spend long periods of time at sea without contact with their loved ones. In addition to combating isolation, this initiative could also improve the mental health and overall morale of seafarers, leading to a more positive work environment. The global shipping community should take heed of MASSA’s call and prioritize the mental well-being of seafarers by equipping cargo ships with internet connectivity. This small step can make a big difference in the lives of seafarers and contribute to their overall welfare.
