The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub (LR MDH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a fleet-specific decarbonisation strategy for the Silk Alliance Green Corridor project. This partnership aims to test decarbonization strategies for container ships, particularly those operating in Asia. LR MDH won the International Maritime Organization (IMO)-MPA NextGEN Connect Challenge for developing a route-based action plan methodology based on the Silk Alliance.

MPA’s participation in the Silk Alliance signifies a significant advancement in the deeper collaboration between global maritime industry players and the Ports Regulatory Authority of Singapore. This collaboration is expected to attract investments across the Indian and Pacific Ocean region. The partners will focus on driving investment in scalable fuel supply infrastructure, while Silk Alliance members aggregate demand signals in view of broader regional bunker demand for alternative fuels. The Silk Alliance, which was launched in May 2022, includes 12 public and private stakeholders such as PSA, MSC Shipmanagement, Pacific International Lines, and Wärtsilä.

Nick Brown, the Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd’s Register, expressed his delight in welcoming MPA to the growing cross-industry collaboration, emphasizing Singapore and MPA’s role in promoting the safe adoption of low to zero-emission fuels in the shipping industry. Teo Eng Dih, the Chief Executive Officer of MPA, stated that MPA is excited to be part of the Silk Alliance and will actively support the decarbonization of container trade in line with the IMO’s revised strategy to reduce emissions from shipping.

Overall, the partnership between MPA and LR MDH under the Silk Alliance aims to accelerate the decarbonization of container trade through the implementation of a fleet-specific decarbonisation strategy. This collaboration will drive investments in fuel supply infrastructure for sustainable shipping and promote the adoption of low to zero-emission fuels in the global shipping industry.
