A new training project aimed at preparing seafarers for the challenges of low-carbon fueled ships, stricter regulations, and advanced technology is set to be unveiled at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. The project, known as the Baseline Training Framework for Seafarers in Decarbonization, was developed by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force, which was established at the COP26 summit in 2021. Members of the task force include the International Chamber of Shipping, the International Transport Workers’ Federation, the United Nations Global Compact, the International Maritime Organization, and the International Labour Organization.

The goal of the project is to provide seafarers with the necessary training to adapt to the changing landscape of the maritime industry, particularly in the face of decarbonization efforts and technological advancements. With the support of key organizations and stakeholders in the maritime sector, the project aims to ensure that seafarers are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the transition to a low-carbon future.

The announcement of the Baseline Training Framework for Seafarers in Decarbonization at the COP28 summit reflects the industry’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and transitioning towards more sustainable practices. By preparing seafarers for the future of shipping, the project aims to support a smooth and successful transition to low-carbon fueled ships and a more environmentally friendly maritime industry.
