The San Francisco Bay Ferry is announcing the upgrade of four of its 15-year-old vessels to newer engine technology to reduce emissions at its terminals by 80%. The project was made possible through partnerships with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Alameda County Transportation Commission. The ferries are primarily used to serve Oakland, Richmond, and South San Francisco. The new cleaner fleet supports WETA’s commitment to protect the Bay and its residents from air pollution and climate impacts. A press conference was held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Oakland Ferry Terminal, where the upgraded ferries were on display for the media.

Confirmed speakers included Sheng Thao, the Mayor of Oakland, Jim Wunderman, Chairman of the WETA Board of Directors, John J. Bauters, Mayor of Emeryville, Chairman of the Air District, and Chairman of the Alameda CTC. Media representatives were invited to tour the ship and meet with those responsible for the ferry system. One-on-one meetings with fleet experts were available prior to the event, and guided tours through the engine room of one of the newly converted ferries were available by appointment.

The press conference was livestreamed on Facebook at @bayareaairdistrict. B-roll opportunities included ferry arrivals and departures as well as passengers loading San Francisco Bay Ferry ships. Validated free parking was available on site at the Washington Street Garage at 101 Washington Street. For media representatives in San Francisco, ferry transportation was available upon request.

With the upgrade, WETA has the cleanest, high-speed, high-capacity ferry fleet in the country and continues to work towards the protection of the Bay and its residents. Those interested in attending can RSVP to Thomas Hall at hall@watertransit.org or call 707-722-5280.
