French hydrogen company HDF Energy, German engineering firm Neuman & Esser (NEA), and the German International Cooperation Society (GIZ) have signed a letter of intent to explore green hydrogen solutions for decarbonizing maritime transport in Indonesia’s small islands. This initiative aims to develop sustainable ferry systems powered by hybrid hydrogen and battery technologies, guided by a feasibility study supported by GIZ under the International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Program (H2Uppp).
The project aligns with Indonesia’s National Hydrogen Roadmap and Net Zero Emission Roadmap for the energy sector. It has the backing of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is anticipated to serve as a model for future pilot projects involving public and private stakeholders in Indonesia and beyond.
Atiek Puspa Fadhilah, an advisor for GIZ Indonesia, emphasized the synergy between maritime and energy transitions, noting the growing demand for sustainable solutions in the maritime sector. She expressed hope that the project would significantly contribute to the decarbonization of ferry transport in Indonesia.
Earlier in 2025, HDF Energy also signed agreements to accelerate its Renewstable hydrogen power plants in Indonesia, furthering its commitment to decarbonizing the maritime sector with green hydrogen initiatives.
