Mumbai: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched cruise operations at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) on April 21. During the event, he inaugurated several key projects, including the renovated Fire Memorial at Victoria Docks and the restored heritage structures, Port House and Evelyn House. Sonowal also unveiled the revamped Sagar Upvan garden and introduced Shore to Ship Electric Supply as part of the Green Port Initiative to enhance sustainability.
The MICT, spanning 415,000 square feet, is designed to accommodate up to 1 million passengers annually, boasting 72 immigration counters and the capacity to handle five ships simultaneously. With an investment of ₹556 crores, this state-of-the-art facility aims to elevate Mumbai’s status in cruise tourism.
The renovated Fire Memorial honors the sacrifice of Mumbai Port Fire Services personnel and features new lighting on historic buildings to boost tourism. The Sagar Upvan Garden, developed with Tata Trusts, includes over 500 plant species, jogging paths, and stunning views of the Arabian Sea.
Additionally, over ₹5,700 crores worth of MoUs were signed for infrastructure at the upcoming Vadhavan Port, with ambitions to position it among the top ten global ports and significantly enhance India’s maritime capacity.
