Nippon Paint Marine has reported significant benefits from applying its advanced polymer technology, AQUATERRAS, on the AIDAdiva cruise ship. This innovation has eliminated the need for in-water hull cleaning for over three years, reducing costs and downtime. John Drew, the company’s director in Europe, explained that the patented structure, combined with a self-polishing mechanism, enhances hull smoothness, leading to lower fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Drew noted that the cruise industry is adapting to stricter regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enhancing sustainability. Clients are focused on improving operational efficiencies while remaining competitive. AQUATERRAS features a unique combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic micro-domains that prevent biological adhesion, achieving a speed loss of only 1 percent over five years, compared to the industry average of 5.9 percent. This results in fuel savings of up to 14.7 percent.
