Inspectors are preparing to board the P&O cruise ship Arvia following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a crew member in a lift shaft accident. The crew member lost his life on Sunday while the Bermuda-registered ship was en route from Southampton to Tenerife.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) announced that a team will join the vessel at its next port to conduct a preliminary assessment of the accident, as requested by the Bermuda Ship Registry. The Arvia, which can accommodate up to 5,200 guests and 1,800 crew members, departed Southampton on Friday.
In light of the incident, the cruise company expressed its condolences and emphasized that they are providing “every possible support” to the family and friends of the deceased crew member, both on board and at home.
The Arvia, a 16-deck cruise ship, is currently on a 14-night transatlantic journey to the Caribbean, with an expected arrival in Barbados on November 7.
