Norwegian ferry operator Boreal has placed an order for 20 electric hydrofoil vessels from Swedish company Candela Technology. While Norway excels in electrifying its car fleet and short-route ferries, high-speed express ferries connecting coastal communities have posed challenges. The Candela P12, capable of cruising at 25 knots and covering approximately 40 nautical miles, accommodates up to 25 passengers, making it suitable for routes currently serviced by diesel vessels.
Alexander Sifvert, Head of Europe at Candela, states that the Candela P12 enables the electrification of high-speed ferry routes previously deemed unfeasible with battery power. The hydrofoils lift the vessel above the water, significantly reducing energy consumption and allowing for charging with standard fast chargers, similar to those for electric cars.
Boreal’s CEO, Nikolai Knudsmoen Utheim, emphasizes that this investment introduces a new generation of fast boats that “fly” over the water, cutting energy use by up to 80% compared to traditional vessels. A full charge takes about one hour, potentially reducing operating costs by up to 90% compared to diesel. The first two P12 vessels will be delivered in 2027, with the remainder following annually until 2030.
