Japan’s NYK Line is set to expand its cruise ship operations through a new partnership with Oriental Land Co., the operator of the Disney theme park at the Tokyo Disney Resort. The two companies have agreed to launch a Disney-themed cruise ship in Japan, tailored specifically for the Japanese market. Oriental Land plans to invest up to $2.2 billion in developing the Japanese cruise operation, with the new ship being the fourth member of the Disney Wish class.
The collaboration between Oriental Land and NYK Group aims to provide family entertainment cruise experiences, combining Oriental Land’s expertise in immersive settings and hospitality with NYK Group’s cruise operations and shipping experience. The new Disney cruise ship will further enhance NYK’s cruise operations, which currently include the Asuka II and the upcoming Asuka III. This expansion is part of Disney Cruise Line’s aggressive growth plan, which includes adding four more cruise ships by 2031.
Disney Cruise Line has been expanding its fleet with new ships built by Meyer Werft, with plans for a total of 12 cruise ships by 2031. In addition to the Japanese Disney-branded cruise ship expected to launch by 2029, Disney Cruise Line is also launching operations from Singapore this year with the completion of the Disney Adventure, a former Global Dream ship. The company’s success and strong bookings indicate a promising future for its growing fleet and global operations.
