Fincantieri has successfully completed sea trials for Princess Cruises’ second Sphere-Class ship, the Star Princess. This vessel, among the largest ever constructed in Italy, is the last of Carnival Corporation’s pre-pandemic orders, marking a significant achievement for Fincantieri in a strong year for the shipbuilder.
The final sea trials took place from August 9 to 12, where the Star Princess conducted extensive tests in the Adriatic Sea, including evaluations of steering, navigation systems, and propulsion. The ship is on schedule for delivery and its inaugural cruise set for October 4, departing from Barcelona. Captain Gennaro Arma, who oversaw the trials, praised the ship’s navigation and maneuverability.
The Star Princess, weighing 177,800 gross tons, is a sister ship to the Sun Princess, which entered service in February 2024. Both vessels can accommodate 4,300 passengers and 1,600 crew members, featuring numerous dining venues and over 1,500 balcony staterooms. They will hold the title of the largest cruise ships built in Italy until larger vessels from Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Lines are delivered later in the decade.
Fincantieri has delivered four cruise ships in 2025 and has an orderbook of 36 additional vessels, with cruise operations accounting for over 40 percent of its total revenues in the first half of the year.
