Clarus Networks has secured a 12-month contract to supply satellite connectivity and technical support for CalMac Ferries, the largest ferry operator in the UK. This agreement, facilitated through Public Contracts Scotland, involves the implementation of a pooled Starlink data service across CalMac’s fleet. The initiative aims to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity, significantly improving operational efficiency, crew welfare, and the overall passenger experience.
CalMac Ferries operates an extensive network, covering 29 routes to over 50 destinations along Scotland’s west coast, with approximately 136,000 sailings annually. This service is crucial for remote communities and plays a key role in supporting Scotland’s tourism industry. In such a geographically diverse and operationally challenging setting, robust connectivity is vital.
Under the contract, Clarus will deliver Starlink satellite connectivity to each vessel, ensuring efficient and cost-effective service through a pooled data model. The agreement also includes technical support for Starlink hardware, access to Aavora—Clarus’ proprietary management platform—and dynamic bandwidth allocation across the fleet to optimize service quality.
Aavora enables real-time diagnostics and bandwidth management, allowing CalMac’s teams to monitor and control Starlink terminals effectively. This solution is essential for maintaining reliable communications in the challenging geographic areas served by CalMac, reinforcing their operational resilience strategy.
