CMA CGM, the French shipping giant, is in advanced discussions with Indian shipyards to construct LNG-powered container ships as part of its strategy to enhance its footprint in India’s maritime industry. The company is also investing in various infrastructure projects, including a $200 million expansion of the Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal and involvement in the upcoming Vadhavan Port project.
To amplify its presence, CMA CGM has launched two Indian-flagged vessels and established a new shipping company in GIFT City, Gujarat. Recently, T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, visited CMA CGM’s headquarters in Marseille. This visit was a follow-up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official trip to France, where discussions revolved around India’s maritime potential and partnerships under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
During their meetings, CMA CGM delineated its expansion plans centered on five key pillars, including shipbuilding collaboration, fleet enhancement, and maritime industrial investment. The company also expressed interest in India’s ship recycling sector and aims to source containers and sustainable materials locally to align with its global sustainability goals. Additionally, CMA CGM is considering establishing maritime research hubs in major Indian cities to foster innovation in shipping.
