DEENDAYAL Port Authority (dpa) and Cochin Shipyard LTD (CSL) have joined forces to establish a cutting-edge ship-repair hub in Gujarat at a cost of 1,750 rupees. CSL will oversee repair operations at the Vadinar facility, paying a fixed rent and license fee to dpa. The hub can accommodate the repair of 32 ships annually, with a detailed project report already submitted to the Union Ministry for Port, Shipping, and Waterways for approval.
Cochin Shipyard LTD has been providing ship repair services since 1982, specializing in maintaining and renovating various types of vessels, including those used for oil exploration. Ship repair capacity is typically measured by the number of vessels serviced and the maximum ship size that can be accommodated in dead weight (DWT).
In the 2022-23 period, CSL led the public sector in ship repair capacity, with Hindustan Shipyard LTD and Goa Shipyard LTD following behind. Overall, 439 ships were repaired in India, marking an increase from the previous year. This collaboration between dpa and CSL aims to enhance India’s ship repair capacity, decrease reliance on foreign entities, and bolster the maritime sector’s growth.
