Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a state-owned shipbuilding and repair company in India, has partnered with HBL Engineering Limited from Hyderabad to establish a Joint Venture (JV) aimed at advancing electric mobility and energy storage technologies in the maritime sector. This collaboration will focus on developing cutting-edge marine batteries, battery management systems, electric motors, power electronics, and charging infrastructure, as highlighted in a recent media release.
The joint venture seeks to serve both domestic and international markets, aligning with the global shift towards sustainable maritime solutions. Jose V. J, Director (Finance) and CMD (Additional Charge) of CSL, emphasized the importance of collaborating with local technology firms to foster the development of state-of-the-art marine batteries and related technologies. He noted that this initiative will not only benefit CSL but also enhance the Indian maritime sector’s ability to adopt indigenous energy solutions, thereby adhering to green shipping standards.
Dr. AJ Prasad, CMD of HBL, expressed enthusiasm for the JV, stating that it represents a significant step towards indigenizing electric propulsion and related systems in the maritime industry. He highlighted HBL’s extensive experience in specialized batteries and motors, asserting that this partnership with CSL will bolster user confidence in sourcing local systems.
