DG Shipping Takes Steps to Support Indian Seafarers with FSUI Talks

The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) recently convened a meeting with representatives from the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) to address longstanding grievances affecting Indian seafarers and their families. This gathering highlighted numerous critical issues related to seafarer welfare.

Key topics raised by the Union included compensation for the families of deceased seafarers, the non-payment of wages, gratuity, and other statutory dues. Additionally, concerns were expressed regarding cases of missing seafarers and the lack of support mechanisms for their families. The discussion also touched on the need for compliance with tribunal awards and the fulfillment of contractual obligations.

Other important matters addressed during the meeting included the establishment of Articles of Agreement for catering crew and issues regarding RPSL compliance and overseas recruitment practices. In response, DG Shipping emphasized its commitment to protecting the rights, welfare, and dignity of Indian seafarers.

The Directorate assured that all issues presented would be thoroughly reviewed in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, following current rules and regulations. DG Shipping reiterated that the welfare of seafarers remains a top priority and pledged ongoing engagement with stakeholders to ensure fair treatment and timely resolution of grievances for India’s maritime workforce.
