The Directorate General of Shipping of the Government of India has released DGS Circular 10 of 2026, which updates the safety advisory for Indian seafarers and stakeholders operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and nearby waters. This move comes in response to the changing maritime security landscape and recent attacks on merchant vessels in these regions.
In light of these threats, shipowners, operators, and RPSL companies must adopt a heightened level of vigilance and situational awareness, alongside strict adherence to maritime security protocols. The advisory emphasizes the critical need for companies to implement various safety measures.
Companies are urged to ensure a continuous watch on vessels operating in the area and to establish a 24/7 emergency contact center. Additionally, they should provide psychological counseling support for seafarers dealing with stress or anxiety due to the current security climate.
Stakeholders are also encouraged to reinforce emergency contacts, enhance crew preparedness, and offer psychological support mechanisms for seafarers and their families. This advisory highlights the importance of timely reporting and coordinated responses to ensure the safety of seafarers and the protection of vessels in the region.
