After an initial setback, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Gujarat is revising its shipbuilding project plans. Initially aimed at constructing Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), the project failed to attract industry interest, leading to the cancellation of a tender that garnered only one bid. DPA is now shifting its focus toward medium-sized vessels like Panamax and Handymax ships, which are more in demand.

To refine the project, DPA will hire a consultant to finalize parameters, find technology partners, and create a new tender framework. The authority plans to supplement government incentives with additional support, including land and environmental clearances, to entice private investors.

This restructuring aligns with the Government of India’s recently announced ₹69,725 crore shipbuilding revitalization plan, which aims to establish India as a global shipbuilding hub. The plan includes financial assistance, funds for maritime investment, and institutional reforms to enhance skills and sustainability in shipbuilding.

By focusing on mid-sized vessels and incorporating flexible terms in the upcoming tender, DPA hopes to stimulate investor interest and bolster India’s maritime manufacturing ambitions, supporting the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the sector.
