Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has commenced construction of a cutting-edge Acoustic Research Ship (ARS) for the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) under DRDO. The keel-laying ceremony was attended by key officials including Dr. Sameer V. Kamat, DRDO Chairman.
The ARS is designed for comprehensive acoustic and oceanographic studies, capable of deploying, towing, and recovering diverse scientific instruments. It will conduct high-resolution surveys of sound velocity profiles, collect oceanographic data, and support the design of underwater moorings. Additionally, it will perform meteorological surveys to assess atmospheric effects on sound propagation.
Measuring 93 meters long and 18 meters wide, the ship will utilize a diesel-electric propulsion system with dynamic positioning, maintaining stability in Sea State 4. Accommodating 120 personnel, it features three deck cranes for scientific equipment and boasts an endurance of 30 days or 4,500 nautical miles at maximum speed.
This ARS contract underscores GRSE’s ongoing partnership with the Indian Navy and DRDO. The yard has previously delivered significant research vessels, including India’s first acoustic research ship, INS Sagardhwani, and continues to enhance its expertise with new projects for the Indian Navy and National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research.
