Mumbai: The Directorate General of Shipping has announced that 11 ships stranded at Yemen’s Ras Isa port, carrying 150 Indian seafarers, have successfully set sail. The last vessel, MT GAZ GMS, departed on June 29, 2025, resolving a lengthy maritime crisis.

This predicament arose after an air raid on April 17, 2025, which significantly damaged port infrastructure and led to a blockade imposed by local authorities in northern Yemen, who required sailing authorizations. Since December 2024, numerous ships were immobilized, leaving crews in prolonged uncertainty.

The resolution was facilitated by persistent diplomatic efforts from the Indian mission in Yemen, with vital support from Indian missions in London, Riyadh, and Washington, D.C. The Directorate General of Shipping expressed deep gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways for their critical interventions and unwavering support.

This situation underscores India’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its seafarers, reaffirming its role as a responsible maritime nation dedicated to protecting its workforce globally.
