The Goa Shipyard Limited launched its second environmental pollution control ship, ‘Samudra Prachet,’ on Wednesday, enhancing India’s coastal defense capabilities. This vessel is designed to enable a swift response by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to oil pollution incidents in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The first ship was launched on August 29, 2024, and is scheduled for delivery soon.

The advanced ships feature state-of-the-art pollution response systems that bolster India’s environmental protection efforts. This initiative is a crucial step toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing, marking a significant milestone for the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. The launch ceremony was attended by ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani and other dignitaries from the Ministry of Defense and Goa Shipyard Limited.

These vessels, measuring 114.5 meters in length and 16.5 meters in width, are not only pivotal for maritime safety but also contribute to the local economy by generating employment and fostering a robust marine manufacturing ecosystem in Goa. The ICG emphasized the importance of these ships for environmental protection and the collaboration between Goa Shipyard Limited and the Coast Guard, reaffirming a commitment to indigenous defense production.
