Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), an established defence public sector company operating for 85 years in Visakhapatnam, is set to develop its first satellite shipyard in Andhra Pradesh. Potential sites being considered include Mulapeta in Srikakulam district and Kakinada port. HSL’s former CMD, Commodore Hemant Khatri (Retd), has approached the state government for land allotment, and after discussions with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, received a favorable response.
Site evaluations are planned, with HSL coordinating with the AP Maritime Board to facilitate land acquisition. The proposed shipyard aims to bolster India’s maritime infrastructure and support HSL’s growth trajectory, which has recently shifted towards profitable ventures in defence, green shipping, and commercial vessels.
Currently, HSL is involved in significant naval projects, including the Landing Platform Dock and Mine Countermeasure Vessels. The satellite yard is expected to feature a floating dry dock, enhancing ship construction and repair capabilities. While design and supply chain operations will remain in Visakhapatnam, this expansion is anticipated to increase HSL’s production capacity and enable decentralised operations.
