In a recent update, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, disclosed plans for the development of six harbor clusters in India. These clusters include four with a capacity of over 300 million tons per year – Cochin-Vizhinjam Port Cluster, Galathea South Bay Port, Chennai-Kamarajar-Cuddalore Port Cluster, and Paradip. Additionally, two port clusters with a capacity exceeding 500 MTPA – Hafen of Deendayal and Thunfisch Tekra, Jawaharlal Nehru-Vadhavan-Hauben, are set to be transformed into mega ports by 2047.
The focus of these port clusters’ development lies in enhancing capacity and infrastructure under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision, set to be accomplished by 2047. Major ports have already begun work on improving infrastructure and increasing capacity through PPP mode and internal funding. These initiatives aim to bolster the country’s maritime sector and support the growing demand for port services in the coming years.
The steps being taken by India to bolster its port infrastructure and capacity signify a promising future for the maritime industry. By focusing on these mega port clusters and undertaking necessary improvements, the government is preparing to meet the increasing demands of trade and transportation efficiently. It is vital for the sustainable growth and development of the country’s port sector to ensure seamless connectivity and operations in the upcoming years.
